ABSTRACT

The marmoset monkey is an alternative non-human primate model in drug development (Abbott et al. 2003; Mansfield 2003; Orsi et al. 2011; Korte et al. 2004) and has also been used as a model for induced Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis

(Vierboom et al. 2010). For biopharmaceutical drugs, nonhuman primates are the relevant animal model in 80% of the cases (Chapman et al. 2007, 2009, 2010). When it comes to justifying using marmosets instead of macaques, tissue cross-reactivity evaluation may eliminate these other nonhuman primate (NHP) species, with the marmoset monkey remaining the only relevant model.
