ABSTRACT

Introduction The relationships between properties of xenobiotic formulations and blood will be explored. The most important physico-chemical properties are osmolality, pH, viscosity, surface tension, and diffusion, all of which are inherent and controlled properties of blood itself. We will see how it is important that vascular infusion formulations comply as closely as possible to the biological matrix (blood and its components) in order to achieve a successful infusion study. Similarly, in later chapters we will see how these factors are also important in the control of infusate volume and rate of delivery as well as compatibility with equipment materials and blood components.
