ABSTRACT

Th e rheumatic diseases are a diverse group of diseases characterized by a proinfl ammatory state and the development of autoimmunity. Adipokines can act as cytokines to alter the immune system and are likely important in the pathogenesis and/or clinical syndromes of rheumatic diseases. In addition they are important factors leading to the metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis (both commonly seen in patients with rheumatic diseases).
