ABSTRACT

Nutrition support of the critically ill patient remains an area of controversy. Large, randomized, controlled trials have started to provide some data, but questions such as the timing of nutrition, nutrient needs, and specic nutrients that would best affect outcomes remain active research topics. The best available evidence is that enteral nutrition (EN) provides improved outcomes in the critically ill patient, compared to parenteral nutrition (PN) (Braunschweig et al. 2001).
