ABSTRACT

Judging from perceptions and conversations while teaching and reviewing hostage cases with experienced crisis negotiators, the person formerly labeled as having an Inadequate Personality Disorder is an individual very frequently encountered as a hostage taker (Birge, 2004). is person may be a male or female. Because most hostage takers are male, the pronoun he will be used throughout this chapter. Like so many other hostage takers, his actions are irrational, inappropriate, and represent an inaccurate and o«en counterproductive response to the problem he is seeking to solve. ese types of hostage takers have a penchant for making a bad situation worse.
