ABSTRACT
However, this production must occur while consuming fewer resources. Available productive farmland is decreasing because of such processes as urbanization, desertication, salinization, and erosion. Agriculture is the dominant consumer of fresh water and a large consumer of energy. The availability of both water and energy is problematic, and agriculture must reduce its consumption of these resources.
