Similar stresses can be created by flowing gases. Wind erosion is responsible for shifting sand dunes in the great deserts of the world as shown in Figure 1.3 [5]. Water, however, is

more powerful, and in its solid form, created the barrier islands of North Carolina, the fjords of Norway, and the Great Lakes. Figure 1.4 shows the mouth of the Vatnajokull glacier in Iceland. The icebergs in the photo look black due to the sediment they carved from the face of the mountain.
