ABSTRACT

The third branch of post-Renaissance physics that started to develop at about the same time as the other two (mechanics and electromagnetism) is thermodynamics. It is amazing that, as soon as the chains of the Dark Ages were broken, the seeds of all areas of modern physics were planted almost simultaneously. Galileo, who gave birth to the science of mechanics, also launched the investigation of the properties of heat.
