ABSTRACT
The machinery of statistical mechanics can help us examine thermodynamics with much more ease than the tools available to the physicists of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, who were stymied by the complexity of the systems they had to study. Nevertheless, it is instructive to follow the historical development of concepts, and make connection with their statistical mechanical analogues. Let’s start with the most basic quantity in thermodynamics.
