Introduction

Electric energy represents a key element in modern society. Fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, or nuclear fuel are burned in a combustor to produce heat, which is then transformed into mechanical energy in a turbine (prime mover). Alternatively, wind and hydroturbines transform wind and hydro energies into mechanical energy. An electric generator is driven directly or through transmission by the turbine to produce electric energy.
