ABSTRACT
The inability of a single parameter, whether the peak ground acceleration, the effective acceleration, or any other variable, to characterize properly an earthquake and its potential effects on structures has been recognized for a very long time. Yet the use of a single parameter has withstood the attacks of time and the research community and continues to be accepted in seismic design.
