ABSTRACT

The human eye is one of the most intricate parts of the human body. It has astounded doctors and scientists and inspired poets and painters with its graceful movement and piercing precision, giving light to life. With this complexity sometimes come problems. Small defects in the development of the eye can lead to a lifelong handicap, where early diagnosis can dramatically improve the outcomes for many young patients. Over decades of ophthalmological research, scientists have developed methods and techniques to provide accurate diagnosis of these defects. However, the scarce number of qualified physicians to help the general population restricts those that can benefit from these developments. In many situations, the underlying causes are minor eye problems and, left untreated, can result in impaired vision or blindness.
