ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews a number of highly representative formal frameworks of information granulation, emphasizes their main features shows linkages among them, and highlights the main differences existing there. The suitable formal framework of information granules is problem oriented and has to be done according to the requirements of the problem, ways of acquisition of information granules and related processing and optimization mechanisms available in light of the assumed formalism of information granularity. The chapter presents the essential computing machinery for information granules. In a nutshell, shadowed sets can be regarded as a general and far more concise representation of a fuzzy set that could be of particular interest when dealing with further computing. Interval analysis has emerged with the inception of digital computers and was mostly motivated by the models of computations therein, which are carried out for intervals implied by the finite number of bits used to represent any number on a computer.
