ABSTRACT

Engineers apply the principles of science to benefit mankind. The most common way to do this is through design. Materials selection is key to design. The purpose of this chapter is to present some basic methods that you can apply throughout your career. It is not possible to give you a “one-size-fits-all” approach; every situation is somewhat different. For this reason only generic examples will be presented. The material selection decisions presented in this chapter therefore are not to be considered as recommendations for design decisions. Material property data presented in this chapter should not be used for reference. The process by which the design decisions are made is the focus of the chapter.
