ABSTRACT
When design engineers are constructing their drawings, they must specify the materials for constructing the object or system being designed. Large corporations frequently have materials engineers who work closely with the design engineers throughout the design process. In smaller companies the design engineer often specifies the materials. In the latter case the design engineer will frequently rely on vendors’ suggestions or use materials from existing designs of similar objects or systems. In some cases materials handbooks may even be used, and in a small percentage of cases a materials consulting engineer may be hired
