ABSTRACT

The SHR-5 proprietary extract from Rhodiola rosea L. roots and rhizome was developed by the Swedish Herbal Institute. Registered in Sweden as a Natural Remedy (1985) and Traditional Herbal Medicinal Product (2008), it is an active constituent of Arctic Root® lm-coated tablets and capsules. It is indicated for use as “an adaptogen, in case of decreased/reduced performance, such as fatigue and sensation/feeling of weakness” based on traditional use only, and not upon clinical trial data. In Denmark, it is used in treating fatigue and during convalescence, whereas in Canada, the health claim is that it “helps to improve mental and physical capacities in case of tiredness and non-specic stress.” SHR-5 is distributed as a dietary supplement in the United States, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, France, Belgium, Italy, Austria, and Germany.
