ABSTRACT

Both site selection and site planning have a major impact on the occurrence and impact of floods on any facility being planned. Site selection includes consideration of issues such as the historical flood record, terrain topography and ground level, and impacts on the hydrology (storm water flows, wetlands, etc.). Decisions made during site planning will impact the local hydrological situation as well as those downstream. The latter falls beyond the scope of this chapter and will therefore be discussed elsewhere (see Chapters 3 and 5).
