ABSTRACT

A variety of biological applications of CTMCs are discussed. Continuoustime branching processes are presented in the first section, an extension of discrete-time branching processes in Chapter 4. Applications to cellular and molecular biology and to epidemic models are presented for which the methods of Chapter 6 can be applied. For example, the stochastic SI epidemic model is a birth process, whereas the stochastic SIS epidemic model is a birth and death process. The remaining applications are to multivariate processes. Therefore, some notation and terminology associated with multivariate processes are reviewed. Then applications to enzyme kinetics, epidemic, competition, and predation processes are presented. First, the corresponding deterministic models are introduced, then the stochastic models. Additional biological applications are discussed in the exercises and others can be found in the references.
