ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we see how transmission errors can be detected and even corrected. There are numerous applications, including the use of error detection and correction, for bar code scanning.
Errors occur when transmitting data. They can result from noisy telephone lines, sun spots, thunder storms, or faulty solder joints. Even under ideal circumstances, random gamma radiation can alter the data. Since errors are unavoidable, we acknowledge this fact and take steps to minimize their harmful effects.
