ABSTRACT

In the domain of intelligent instrumentation, in particular the industrial instrumentation, interfacing of the intelligent sensors to the processor and the users is amajor issue. With the advent of complex data acquisition and control frameworks, the intelligent sensor interfacing protocols have also developed manyfold. In order to achieve higher efciency, uniformity, and «exibility of the intelligent sensors, various interfacing protocols have been developed either in wireless or in Internet platforms. IEEE 1451 (draft proposal) is such astandard that species interfacing of intelligent sensors with eldbuses or direct coupling to Ethernet-based intranet. In spite of the enormous growth of the protocols, smart sensor applications are being slowed down due to the lack of universal standards in wireless areas [1]. Since the smart sensors and networks are becoming very cost-effective solutions in the application areas, smart sensor interfacing to network has become an economical solution in distributed instrumentation environment. On the other hand, choosing the right network for aparticular instrumentation system is also atrade-off in the design criterion of the transducer manufacturer to cut the cost.
