Shafts are long machine components that in operation either rotate or swing around a rectilinear axis. Shafts and axles can be distinguished from gudgeons according to the stress involved:
• Gudgeons are quite compact, so the bending moment stress is unimportant (leverage is small) compared to shearing and torque stress.
