ABSTRACT

The following case studies represent improvement stories that are in progress in a variety of emergency departments (EDs) from the east to the west coast. Each of these organizations has applied the principles presented in this book in its change efforts and has made substantial improvements in key ED metrics. These changes have undoubtedly saved lives and greatly improved the quality of the experience for hundreds of thousands of patients across the United States. These changes are focused on the door-to-doc, doc-to-dispo, and dispo-to-departure intervals, or a combination of these intervals. Three organizations have actually begun to spread these concepts throughout their hospitals in support of their ED work.
