ABSTRACT

According to a latest estimate, the world’s population will have grown to 9 billion people in 2050 and the life expectancy will have increased from 67.6 in 2009 to 75.5 years (United Nations 2009). Approximately, 70% of this population will be urban and it is expected that gross income levels will have increased. To feed the increased, more urban, and richer population, it has been calculated that food production must increase by 70%. As a result of urbanization and income growth, food diets will most likely change. Indeed, meat consumption is expected to grow with an extra 74% in 2050 to 470 million tons (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations 2009).
