ABSTRACT

It should be clear from the preceding chapters that humans have had a big impact on natural resources, especially ‘shes and aquatic systems. In response, an ecosystem approach to management has emerged in an attempt to save the parts needed for ecosystem function. In this chapter, we discuss what those parts are, why they are important, and integrate some concepts of species conservation and recovery with ecological-based management. The plans and actions for conservation and recovery of species are clearly related to the ideals of ecological (ecosystem) management as presented in the preceding chapter.
