ABSTRACT

Earth is unique among the planets in our solar system. An alien space traveler entering its system would quickly determine from a spectral and visual evaluation that most of its surface is covered by water and there is free oxygen in its mostly nitrogenous atmosphere. Presumably, the traveler would decide that life on this “blue planet” would evolve in water, and organisms would at least be tolerant of the effects of free oxygen.
