ABSTRACT

All students of biology and ecology should be familiar with the concepts of adaptation and the ecological niche. However, many students that enter senior level ecology course seem a somewhat vague about adaptation and the niche, and the signi‘cance, meaning, and application of such concepts. Accordingly and at the risk of oversimpli‘cation and redundancy, I will attempt to provide a better baseline here that the student may build upon: ‘rst, that the niche concept is all about adaptation and tolerance; second, that there are at least three ways in which the niche concept has been applied.
