ABSTRACT
The development of the ECG as a clinically useful tool began in the latter half of the nineteenth century and rapidly developed in the early twentieth century, such that by the 1940s the standard 12-lead ECG had taken on the appearance that is still recognizable today. In this chapter we chart the history of the ECG from the earliest experiments up to the present day.
