ABSTRACT

This section passes through the body of the tenth thoracic vertebra (21) and anteriorly transects the xiphoid (4).

The oesophagogastric junction (12) is seen in longitudinal section. This acts as a physiological sphincter in the prevention of reflux. The fundus of the stomach (11) contains air in the erect position but in the supine position is normally full of fluid. It is opaque in the CT image because of the ingested radio-opaque iodinated material.
