Preventing and managing occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens

Introduction There is always a potential risk of serious infection with HIV and other blood-borne pathogens (BBPs) during healthcare activities. Patients are also at risk of healthcareassociated infection if they are exposed to blood from another patient or from infected healthcare providers. The consequences of infection with BBPs can be dire and in many cases lead to chronic infection and illness.
