ABSTRACT
Introduction Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is the end-stage of a long infectious disease process beginning with primary HIV infection. Our understanding of exactly how this virus causes the relentless, progressive and profound immunosuppression seen in HIV disease has been dynamic, changing as a result of continuing clinical experience and advances in scientific knowledge.
