ABSTRACT

Introduction The advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in the latter half of the 1990s transformed both the clinical care and the health outlook for people living with HIV infection. Although HAART regimens have produced dramatic reductions in HIV-related mortality in countries where they are available, there is also considerable evidence that strict adherence is a crucial factor in maximizing the benefits of therapy. In the developed world, the challenge for both healthcare practitioners and people living with HIV infection is how to sustain a life-long commitment to near-total adherence to potent, toxic and often complex regimens of antiretroviral therapy.
