ABSTRACT
Terminological systems such as those described in the previous chapter are usually createdwith a specific purpose in mind. ICD was created to collect morbidity and mortality statistics. The Read codes were initially developed for primary care physicians, and SNOMED was originally developed to code pathological concepts. As these systems grow in size, and as their use becomes widespread within their intended domain, it becomes increasingly tempting to re-use them for other tasks.
