ABSTRACT

For those who regard modern healthcare as a rational and scientific endeavour, the con-tention that the efficacy of much clinical practice is still not validated may come as a shock. The problem healthcare faces is not that it lacks the will or the tools to evaluate treatments. As we saw in Chapter 6, the problem lies in part with the mechanisms that exist for transferring evidence into clinical practice, which are unable to keep up with the ever-growing mountain of clinical trial data (Roper et al., 1988; Wyatt, 1991).
