ABSTRACT

The goal of a computer-based protocol system is to provide a set of tools that allow a clin-ician to access up-to-date guidelines, and then apply these in the management of patients. In the previous chapter, the nature and role of protocols were explored, and we saw how protocols can either be used as passive resources or contribute actively in shaping the process of care. A consequence of intertwining protocols with active care delivery is that protocols become integral to the design of the electronic patient record.
