ABSTRACT

Ingestion of polluted drinking water has long been known to pose the risk of hepatitis, typhoid, cholera, dysentery and other gastrointestinal diseases.4 With the greater worldwide awareness of increasing environmental pollution has come awareness that the swimmer or diver may also be exposed to the risk of these and other infections. Although where monitoring is in place, beaches worldwide are periodically closed due to sewage pollution, the safety of many unmonitored locations is uncertain.
