ABSTRACT

Some injuries are so severe that they are immediately and obviously incompatible with life, for instance the gross disruption of a body caused by an explosion. Minimal injuries, for example abrasions, are extremely unlikely to lead to any significant degree of incapacity, let alone disability or death. Between these two ends of the spectrum lie a wide range of types and severity of injuries that may or may not result in incapacity, disability or death. The effects of trauma depend not only on the severity of the injury but also on the response of the individual to that particular trauma.
