ABSTRACT
In the late 1600s and early 1700s, juries were sometimes hesitant to send criminals to the gallows and thus a guilty verdict was not always passed. Alternatives at the time were to offer criminals a pardon if they joined the army or navy, or transportation to the Americas or Australia.
