C H A P T E R 1 Timeline 1814-1815 Wiener Kongress

The period following the collapse of Napoleon’s Rheinbund in 1814 is often described as the ‘Restauration’ (restoration), since many of the German princes resumed the political control they had enjoyed under the old Reich. However, the term ‘Restauration’ is really a misnomer, since the impact of Napoleonic rule could not simply be ignored; the status quo of 1789 was not fully restored.
