ABSTRACT
The infinitive may act as a verb or noun. In the latter case it is masculine and usually singular: fumar es malo para Ia salud 'smoking is bad for the health'. One must not use the gerund to translate this kind of English sentence: *fumando es malo para la salud is definitely not Spanish.
