ABSTRACT

Spanish pronunciation is shown in this book by a system of phonetic transcription which offers only a rough guide to pronunciation and deliberately departs from the International Phonetic Alphabet, which is confusing for non-experts. The signs whose pronunciation i s not self-evident are:

ß voiced bilabial fricative Air released steadily through lips heldas for English b

Other signs should be given their usual Spanish pronunciation. Y in the transcriptions must always be pronounced like the y of English 'yes', never as a vowel; aw is similar t o the o w in English 'cow'; ay is similar t o the i in English 'high' .
