ABSTRACT

Freud’s theories Introduction Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) is one of the giant figures in personality psychology. His theories set out to explain every interesting aspect of human behaviour – from child development to religion, from sexual behaviour to wit and humour – and it provided a method for treating many psychiatric disorders. It is still one of the very few theories that proposes that people may be motivated and influenced by factors of which they are completely unaware. There is no substitute for reading translations of Freud’s original works, especially as several of them were written to educate nonexpert readers, such as his medical colleagues.
