ABSTRACT

Introduction The personality theories considered so far have attempted to understand the nature of personality and its underlying processes through detailed analyses of individuals. The pattern of free associations generated by Freud’s small sample of patients led to elaborate and speculative theories about the structure of mind, child development, motivation and other aspects of personality structure and process. Kelly sought to understand each person’s unique pattern of personal constructs – the unique cognitive framework that each individual uses to anticipate and model events in the world. Rogers’ theory is still less analytical, viewing people as whole individuals who grow and develop over time, coming to like and accept themselves as they are.
