INTRODUCTION Why carry out a physical examination when twentyfi rst century imaging using ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provide non-invasive, almost ‘anatomical’ pictures and are readily available in most hospitals in the developed world? These investigations can make clinical examination seem redundant and even ‘antiquated’.
