ABSTRACT
The view of phonology presented in this textbook to this point has been derivational in nature. That is, the phonetic surface forms of segments and words are derived from abstract underlying representations of those segments and words by applying phonological rules. The goal of phonology is to relate such abstract forms to their concrete realisations. Such derivation, however, is not the only way of expressing those relationships and linking underlying representations with surface forms.
