ABSTRACT

Spanish adverbs and adverb phrases can be divided into two large classes: (1) adverbs formed from adjectives by adding the suffi x - mente to an adjective and (2) invariable words and phrases. Examples of the former type are tranquilamente ‘tranquilly’, violentamente ‘violently’, naturalmente ‘naturally’. Examples of the latter are mal ‘badly’, ayer ‘yesterday’, adrede (familiar aposta) ‘on purpose’, en serio ‘seriously’ (i.e. not jokingly), aquí ‘here’, etc.
