ABSTRACT
When it is used as a relative pronoun, el que is found only after prepositions (it has other uses as a nominalizer, explained in Chapter 36). Foreign students often neglect the more usual el que and quien in favour of el cual, which tends nowadays to be confi ned to formal styles.
