ABSTRACT

Such mobility comes with an environmental price tag, and the effects of transport on the environment are wide-ranging. Some of the major issues are summarized in Table 16.1; they include air pollution and noise from road and air

traffic, and marine pollution from shipping (see Chapter 6). The transport sector of economies is also a major consumer of resources, including energy, minerals and land. The burdens imposed vary greatly between different types of transport, however, and some indication of the differential impacts of transport modes is given in Table 16.2.
