It is also important to understand that there are substantial risks for those who are dependent on alcohol and suffer alcohol withdrawal. Untreated alcohol
withdrawal can be fatal and those involved in clinical assessment and management must understand how to diagnose and treat such individuals. The degree of alcohol withdrawal can be quantified using the Clinical Withdrawal Assessment of Alcohol Scale (Figure 19.2).
