ABSTRACT

Laparoscopic colectomy is gaining acceptance as the literature expands and experience grows. Younger surgeons, who have been immersed in laparoscopic techniques throughout their training, are quickly adapting to laparoscopic colectomy as they move into practice. More experienced surgeons, trained in traditional open techniques, are eager to learn laparoscopic colectomy as the public continues to demand minimally invasive techniques. Since the publication of the COST (Clinical Outcomes of Surgical Therapy) trial, which demonstrated oncologic equivalence between open and laparoscopic segmental colectomy, interest in mastering laparoscopic techniques has escalated.1
