ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of social networks and the basic properties that dictate how networks form and function. The pivotal role that social processes play in the genesis of many diseases is described, followed by an exploration of the way social media can be used in healthcare both to support health services and to manage health conditions. The important concept of a network intervention (NI), in which the target of the intervention is to change the network around an individual, rather than necessarily the individual himself or herself, is explained, and a set of design requirements for social media interventions to manage health conditions effectively is outlined.
